Electing a president that cares

Friends:

Never, since I was born in 1948 and started voting in 1972, have we had a more important presidential election. We have an incompetent president who literally endangers the lives of thousands of Americans.
He is a master at dividing Americans, setting them off fighting each other, so we frequently avoid the entire subject of presidential politics. Why do so many avoid this subject? Because our very friends might be on opposite sides of the presidential fence. I love my Norton Singer theatre friends. But I won’t talk politics with them. Their friendship has meant too much for me to lose it because of an argument over Donald Trump. Enuf said.

But now Donald Trump is costing our neighbors and families a lot more than their mere friendships. Forty five thousand people have died since February when the first Americans succumbed to COVID 19. Forty Five thousand!!! That is as many Americans as the entire population of the city of Attleboro, Massachusetts, or Burlington, Vermont! Three quarters of a million Americans have been sickened by COVID 19, and thousands upon thousands of Americans have been hospitalized and weakened by this horrific virus.

Now… I’m not blaming Donald Trump for the virus. But I sure am blaming President Trump for not preparing us to fight it! He knew what was happening in China. He knew what was happening in Italy and Spain.
Donald Trump knew this disease could easily jump oceans and head right for North America. Jet planes and ships transported sick people right onto our shores and started killing us almost two months ago, beginning on the west coast, especially in the state of Washington.

Donald Trump did not help us prepare for the virus. He did not push for nationwide testing of the disease. He didn’t insure that all medical providers, hospitals, fireman and police….. had sufficient personal protective equipment. He did not stress self-distancing until the disease was right on top of us. And by the time the individual states started shutting down businesses, the virus was … once again …. right on top of us. And now, Donald Trump is not stopping states like Florida, South Carolina, and George from reopening beaches and businesses. In short, he is not leading the war against coronovirus.! Donald Trump is several steps behind leaders like the governors of New York, Washington, California … and of course, Governor Baker of Massachusetts. But my question is: Who is really in charge during the war on COVID-19?

This world war is being fought right on our own shores…. it’s being in fought in Boston, Seattle, Detroit, New Orleans, and yes…. right here in Attleboro, Massachusetts. I swear, Donald Trump does not know what to do about it. He changes his mind every two or three days. He appears as concerned about the stock market as he is about losing thousands of Americans a week to the virus!

I want businesses to open up soon, too… but not until we have the virus under complete control! I miss eating at Morin’s, visiting friends at the senior center, going to my favorite bookstore in Plainville, but now is not the time. It’s dangerous out there.

My daughter recently bought her new home in Charleston, South Caroline, which felt relatively safe to me….. until the local authorities started talking about opening up the beaches of South Carolina so tourists could spend their money. MAYBE DONALD TRUMP NEEDS TO FLY DOWN TO THOSE BEACHES IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND WALK IN THE WATER… OR ON THE WATER. Would he feel safe greeting the throngs of people lounging alongside the ocean?

Meanwhile thousands more Americans are likely to perish alone, in an emergency COVID 19 hospital ward, without their loving family gathered around them.

THAT’S WHY i WANT TO BE A DELEGATE TO THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. I worked hard in New Hampshire, Attleboro, Foxboro, Mansfield and Taunton knocking on doors in late February to elect Bernie Sanders. Bernie has invited me to run to be a delegate….. Now Bernie is endorsing Joe Biden and so will I.

JOE BIDEN ABSOLUTELY HAS TO DEFEAT DONALD TRUMP…. not only to end this virus, but to also prepare us to fight Climate Change and the resulting IMMENSE tragedy that climate change threatens to bring.

Our dear planet is cracking under the choking smog of automobile fumes. DONALD TRUMP WANTS TO CANCEL ALL THE PROGRESS AMERICA HAS MADE FIGHTING AUTO EMISSIONS … ALL IN THE NAME OF MAKING MONEY FOR THE SUPER RICH. Enuf said!

Donald Trump has given us a legacy. He has set out to destroy our dear environment.. and appears to place the stock market as a higher priority than saving human lives.

Donald, you didn’t cause this pandemic…. but you didn’t give us enough tests, enough Personal Protective Equipment, enough leadership….. to stop it.

So, I will support Joe Biden… just as I supported Bernie Sanders….

BECAUSE IF WE HAVE A SECOND WAVE OF CORONOVIRUS THIS WINTER…. IF JOE BIDEN ISN’T ELECTED PRESIDENT THIS FALL…. GOD HELP US!!!!!

1. WHO IS TY WATERMAN?

I’ve been a career social worker with the Dept. of Developmental Disablities, Dare Family Services (Boston), and the Atleboro YMCA. I ran foster care in Boston and Brockton for 19 years, focusing on helping people gain skills to help themselves. I’m a social worker, a therapist, and now am working for the citizens of Attleboro, Mass.

Two years ago I was elected to the Attleboro City Council. While serving on the Democratic City Committee for six years, I helped elect both Mayor Paul Heroux and State Rep. Jim Hawkins. Early in my career I served on the New Hampshire Democratic State Committee and worked for U.S. Senator Thomas J. McIntyre (NH). I’ve been a delegate to the Mass. Democratic State Convention for the past three years and recently was elected to the Democratic State Committee.

I’m a father of two adult daughters while living in Foxboro, Mass. (13 years) and in Attleboro (18 years.) My wife (Jan) is a retired music teacher who taught in Framingham. In my spare time I wrote the book "The Year the Red Sox Won the Series" about the 1918 world champs.

2. WHY I SUPPORTED BERNIE SANDERS.

Bernie Sanders cares about Americans … he cares about people struggling to make their rent or mortgage, affording good health care, paying their college education bills, and growing old with dignity, Bernie wants us to have affordable prescription drugs and a livable minimum wage. He wants us to live in a safe, healthy environment and have the tools to fight climate change. Bernie Sanders wants to help honest people who are seeking a better life in the United States. Bernie cares about LGBTQ people and their rights. Need I say more?

Bernie is a politician I both admire and trust. I campaigned for Bernie in New Hampshire and then organized his campaign site in Attleboro/Taunton, where Bernie achieved 31% of the vote.

3. WHAT DO I HOPE TO ACHIEVE AS A BERNIE SANDERS DELEGATE?

PARTY UNITY: As Democrats we need to focus on electing a president who unites our country. Bernie Sanders has endorsed former Vice-President Joe Biden to be the next president of the United States. I support his endorsement. Bernie and Joe both want good affordable health insurance, they both want to fight climate change, a much cleaner environment, affordable higher education, supporting working class families, and a humane immigration policy. I want to use my social work and political skills to help unite Democrats, to adopt a progressive Democratic platform, and together, with Bernie’s assistance, unite to elect Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
